On the hunt for new artist-crushes, I came across Max Colby, a Boston-based mixed media artist. From his website: "The stress of Max’s work is placed on external manifestations of identity construction as a highly performative act." He works in both 2D and 3D, but I find his mixed media sculpture series Skins for a Casual Day to be my favorites.

a chip off the old block

Dan Webb's wood sculptures absolutely blow me away. Carved from a single block, they display such soft, realistic form that is almost unbelievable. I would love to see some of these in person.

beautiful disasters

A friend of mine recently asked if I knew of any interesting artists who work with alternative media to create organic sculptures (she teaches 3D Design at a local college). I gave her a few names, before I remembered Chicago-based artist Rachel Niffenegger who I found via Polaroid Cupcake in this post from last spring. Niffenegger's mixed media works are beautifully abstract. I love the way she crafts such materials as fabric, wood and string into these organic, almost pulsating sculptures.

Whenever I think of polymer clay, this is what typically pops into my head.

And then I came across Angela Schwer's polymer clay sculptures. She sells her fantastically beautiful work on Etsy under the shop name DillyPad (named for her children Davis and Lily). To find out more about her and how she makes each piece, read this interview with her here.

The porcelain work of ceramic artist Kate MacDowell is a sight to behold. Each piece is lovingly handcrafted, showing off MacDowell's obvious talent, but also capturing a a kind of beautiful grotesqueness that has you wanting to take a closer look. As commentaries on man's damaging impact on his surrounding environment, each piece assaults our sense of comfort by seamlessly blending together man and nature, offering up images of stunning pain.
